The picturesque village of Mellor is situated in the beautiful Ribble Valley, in Lancashire.
The valley itself is set in the Forest of Bowland, which has been recognised officially as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).
Not a forest in the traditional sense of the word, the Forest of Bowland consists of some 300 square miles of moorland, with fells, valleys, small rivers and more, making it a fabulous location for hikers. You can also enjoy cycling and a quiet spot of fishing here.
Try the Tolkien Trail during your stay here. The trail ends in Hurst Green, in the Ribble Valley. J.R.R. Tolkien adored nature and is known to have spent time working on Lord of the Rings at Stonyhurst College during the Second World War.
Just half an hour by car from Mellor is the iconic Pendle Hill. Separate from the Bowland Fells, the hill has an intriguing past and is renowned for the famous Pendle Witch Trials, which took place in the early 17th century.
Visit Clitheroe, too, the place to be if you like browsing market stalls. Clitheroe has preserved a great deal of its old character. The open-air market is popular and takes place several times each week, so make the most of them to drop by and treat yourself to something nice.
